THE SCIENCE OF THE SOUL: PATI, PASU AND PASA

The Science of the Soul: Pati, Pasu and Pasa

In Saiva Siddhanta, spirituality is not a matter of mere belief, but of subtle anatomy. To understand who we are and why we suffer, we must comprehend the relationship between the three eternal components of existence.

1. Pati: The Supreme Lord

Pati is the Lord, the Original Programmer, Pure Benevolence (Shiva). He is not a distant judge, but the very consciousness that sustains the universe. Pati is eternally free from bonds, and His nature is pure Light and Love.

2. Pasu: The Individual Soul

Pasu literally means "cattle" or "one who is bound." This is us—the souls. By nature, we are infinite and divine, but our consciousness is limited and clouded by impurities. Like an animal tied to a rope, the soul circulates around the ego, forgetting its own vastness.

3. Pasa: The Bond (The Rope)

Pasa is what binds us to the cycle of births and deaths. It is composed of three "knots" or impurities (Malas):

  • Anava (The Ego): The deepest impurity. It is the persistent feeling of "I" and "mine." It is the illusion that we are isolated beings, independent of God. It is the pride that blinds us.

  • Karma: The law of cause and effect resulting from our actions.

  • Maya: The material world we use as a stage for our evolution, but in which we ultimately get lost.

The Path of Liberation: Overcoming Anava

The spiritual journey is the process of Mukti—liberation. It is not about gaining something new, but about losing what does not belong to us.

True detachment begins with the destruction of Anava. As long as the ego rules, the soul remains as Pasu (bound). When the ego dissolves through devotion and knowledge, the soul frees itself from the rope (Pasa) and recognizes its unity with the Lord (Pati).

Ridding oneself of the ego is not about self-annihilation; it is about deflating the false importance we give to our opinions, possessions, and titles. It is about ceasing to be the "owner of truth" to become the receiver of Divine Truth.
